At BGC, we have always known that bullying, regardless of whether it’s physical, verbal, written, or online, has long-term negative impacts for everyone involved… the targets of bullying (and their friends and families), the witnesses, and the bullies themselves. We also know that there are constructive ways for kids to develop skills to prevent bullying and to thrive, and that by developing those skills in a supportive environment, the emotional and psychological scars from bullying can be avoided. After all, bullying is just a behaviour, and we can all choose to be kind instead.
That’s precisely what we do in our BGC programs and activities. Our programs and services foster self-esteem, relationships, belonging, and respect for self and others – all of which are key elements in bullying prevention.
Every day at BGC, over 1,000 children and youth get the help they need to learn to develop positive relationships – with peers, family, teachers, and the community at large. Our focus is on providing all kids – regardless of their circumstances – with three of the things they need the most: a safe place to belong, a sense of success, and positive relationships with adults and peers. CKNW’s Pink Shirt Day campaign generates the funds we need to run our anti-bullying programs, and we are grateful for that. We hope you joined in. If not, but you’d like to – click here!
