BGC South Coast BC’s Carolyn Tuckwell honoured with King Charles III Coronation Medal
VANCOUVER, BC – March 11, 2024 – BGC South Coast BC proudly announces that its President & CEO, Carolyn Tuckwell, has been awarded the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal. This honour recognizes her significant contributions to the community and the profound and positive impact on children, youth, and families through her leadership at BGC South Coast BC (BGC).
The medal was presented at the Kimount Club, one of BGC’s 10 neighbourhood Clubs across the Lower Mainland that provide safe, inclusive, and supportive spaces for children and youth when they aren’t at home or at school. The ceremony celebrated Carolyn’s outstanding dedication to fostering opportunity and well-being for young people, as well as her instrumental role in shaping social policy for child and youth services in British Columbia.
Carolyn’s leadership was pivotal in the establishment of the Recreational Care Category under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Child Care Licensing Regulation, one of the most significant social policy advancements for children and youth in decades. This achievement protected BGC’s long-standing drop-in service model, ensuring that thousands of children and youth continue to have access to flexible, self-directed, and no-barrier programs during the critical after-school hours. Her collaborative, strategic approach with government stakeholders led to a policy shift that recognized the unique and essential role of social recreation programming.
Jill Yates, Chair of BGC’s Agency Board and Managing Partner at McCarthy Tetrault, shared her thoughts on Carolyn’s impact:
“Through her dedication, Carolyn has played an integral role in creating environments where young people feel empowered, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential. Her leadership and commitment to the values of BGC have made lasting differences in the lives of many and truly deserve this recognition.”
About BGC South Coast BC (formerly known as Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC): At BGC South Coast BC (BGC), we believe that every kid is amazing. And we know that by seeing and hearing them, they’ll believe it too! That is why, for over 85 years, BGC has been giving children and youth something they deserve: a place to belong when they aren’t at home or at school. To kids, their Club feels like a place where they can hang out with their friends and make new ones – but it’s so much more. It’s a safe place that provides them with three of the things they need most: a sense of belonging, a sense of success, and positive relationships.
