Being a kid is HARD. The world is getting better at recognizing that kids are experiencing significant levels of stress, anxiety, worry, loneliness…
Being a parent is also HARD. Add in global, national, and local issues, and the same stress, anxiety, worry, loneliness repeats.
For families who connect with us, we hear what a gift BGC is to their kid, and to them! One of our older Club members shared that her parents called BGC a “trusted place” – where they knew she was safe, getting great opportunities, and in good hands.
As adults, we often assume that kids and youth don’t appreciate their parents (maybe some of you reading this are experiencing that right now!) Because of the long standing relationships we build with our kids, we also have the chance to hear youth directly speak about their families, and you might be surprised to learn how consistently that includes deep appreciation and respect. Here’s what they’ve shared:
“I realize how hard my parents worked and how dedicated they were to keep a roof on top of our heads and food to eat. They wanted to give us a great childhood.”
“My parents sacrificed so much so that we could become something.”
“My parents fled violence and fear to provide a safer and more promising life for our family. It has not been easy but their determination has inspired me to continuously strive for success and make them proud.” |
