As Pink Shirt Day approaches, it’s a timely moment to reflect on the stories we share – and those we don’t.
At BGC, our mission is to create inclusive spaces for young people, where they can share their experiences, joys, and struggles, without fear of shame. Yet the reality is that too many kids still carry “unshareable stories” – stories of bullying, pain and isolation.
Regardless of whether it’s physical, verbal, written, or online – we know that bullying has long-term negative impacts for everyone involved… the targets of bullying (and their friends and families), the witnesses, and the bullies themselves. We also know that there are constructive ways for kids to develop skills to prevent bullying and to thrive, and that by developing those skills in a supportive environment, we can help kids and youth turn their unshareable stories into tales of resilience, empowerment, and triumph.
Wondering what that looks like here at BGC? In our Clubs, 96% of kids and youth say that are more aware of the feelings of others because of BGC.
Since 2008, BGC has partnered with the CKNW Kids’ Fund to support Pink Shirt Day and all of the efforts that go into putting an end to bullying. We hope that you will join us on February 28th in donning your own pink shirt, standing in solidarity against bullying and leading with empathy, compassion, and kindness.
